JF-17 Block 3 To Get New High-Tech RD-93MA Engine With 9300 Kgf Thrust:

The JF-17 Block 3 is going to get the new high-tech RD-93MA Engine that features 9300 kfg thrust. According to the details, the General Manager of United Engine Corporation (Klimov) of Russia, Alexander Ivakh has revealed that Russia has made about 70 numbers of RD-33 family engines last year.


The RD-93MA is a new generation engine and is basically the derivative of RD-33 Series 3 Engine that features low-mounted accessory gearbox.

Russia has exported this engine to the CHINA for the installation in JF-17 Fighter Jets, which are being produced by both PAKISTAN and CHINA.

The first 15 engines were assembled by United Engine Corporation, while the rest of the deliveries were solely handled by the Cherynyshev Maschine-Building Enterprise since 2006.

In April 2005, the Cherynyshev Maschine-Building Enterprise clinched the initial order of about 100 RD-93 Engines with an option of 400 more engines for the future as well.

PAKISTAN AIR FORCE JF-17 Block 1 and Block 2 used the RD-92 Engines with the 8300 kfg thrust, now the new version of RD-93MK will add one ton thrust more  up to 9300 kgf.

Klimov or United Engine Corporation (UEC) has confirmed the reports of new engine of JF-17 Block 3 and said, “the company’s jet engine priorities are the development of the modified RD-93MA Engine with the thrust enhanced to 9,300 kgf for a foreign customer.”

The production of the RD-33 Engine is now handled by the Cherynyshev Maschine-Building Enterprise based in Russian Capital, Moscow. Previously, all the production of RD-33 Series 2 Engines was handled by the Baranov OMO Enterprise in Omsk, but the facility is now overseeing overhauling and maintenance of RD-33 Engines as customers now move to RD-33 Series 3 Engines.

Cherynyshev Maschine-Building Enterprise has also working on another variant of RD-33 Engine as the RD-33MK, which is designed for the indian navy MiG-29K light combat fighter jet.

Salient Features of JF-17 Block 3 RD-93MA Engine:

The RD-93MA is an enhanced form of RD-93 Engine it would be distinguished by the increased thermodynamic parameters, improved operational characteristics, automatic Power Plant control system and a large outer fan. The RD-93MA engine is also provided with the emergency start mode and fuel drain possibility is also realized. “

The RD-93MA Engine features enhance 9300 kgf thrust and the enhanced one tone thrust would significantly add more power to JF-17 Thunder Block 3 to fly at higher speeds and carry more armaments, missile and munitions than the previous RD-93 Engine.

The JF-17 Block 3 is PAKISTAN’s indigenous and 4.5++ Generation combat aircraft that features the revolutionary and high-tech KLJ-7A Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar, improved Avionics, Electronics Suite and powerful RD-93MA Engine.

The prototype of JF-17 Block 3 took place at the Chengdu Aircraft Industry in Chengdu, CHINA earlier this year.

The JF-17 Block 3 would also be consisting of new IIR-based Infrared Homing System or Missile Warning System and it will also be equipped with the new wide-angle HUD display.

The production of JF-17 Block 3 is expected to commence in the current year of 2020 and PAF will induct about 15-20 Block 3 Aircraft in its arsenal at the end of the year.
