The mission carried out by the PNS HANGOR Submarine is amongst the most successful stealth missions undertaken by the PAKISTAN NAVY. In this mission, the one conventional Submarine of PAKISTAN NAVY manages to completely destroyed INS Khukri and causes heavy losses another indian navy warship named as INS Kirpan.
The destruction of indian navy warship INS Khukri also results in the painful and humiliating death of 18 officer and 176 Sailors of PAKISTAN NAVY.
How One PAKISTAN NAVY Submarine PNS HANGOR Managed To Completely Destroy the INS Khukri and Damaging The INS Kirpan During PAKISTAN-india 1971 War?
On the midnight of 26 November 1971, the PNS HANGOR Submarine hailed from its NAVAL BASE, Karachi. The PNS HANGOR was armed with lethal Torpedoes and was deployed to patrol the Bombay Harbor.
The state of the art Tracking System PAKISTAN NAVY successfully identified and tracked two indian navy warships, ranging from 6-8 miles.
The tracking system, however, could not track the targets due to the distance and speed of the indian navy warships, This task was done by the Brave and Courageous crew of PNS HANGOR, who have successfully identified the exact location and distance of indian navy warships in the area.
At the midnight of 3 December 1971, PAKISTAN NAVY communication system intercepts the radio transmissions from the indian navy warships belonging to the western naval command of indian navy to launch a missile attack on Karachi.
The PNS HANGOR Submarine started to patrol the area stealthily and it was passed over by the large squadron and fleet of western naval command of indian navy, including the INS Mysore.
All the computers and tracking system were shut down by the indian navy to avoid any chances for the detection of indian fleet. However, the Commanding Officer of PNS HANGOR Commander Tasnim informs the PAKISTAN NAVY Headquarter about the possibility of an attack by indian navy on Karachi, however, this message was intercepted by the indian navy.
In the daytime of December 3 1971, after intercepting the communication between the PNS HANGOR Submarine and PAKISTAN NAVY HQ, the western command of indian navy immediately dispatched two numbers of its state of the art Warships that are equipped and armed with the Anti-Submarine Warfare elements to track and trace the exact the location of PNS HANGOR in the area.
The two submarines dispatched by western naval command of indian navy named as INS Khukri and INS Kirpan. Both ships were capable of ASW warfare and they were headed by the indian navy Captain M. N. Mulla.
On December 4, 1971, PAKISTAN NAVY Headquarter communicated the crew of PNS HANGOR and gave her war code instruction in codes that they are clear to engage and they can attack the fleet of the indian navy at their own will and time of choice.
After receiving the go ahead by the NHQ, the PNS HANGOR Submarine detects the possible signature of both the indian frigates, INS Khukri and INS Kirpan, dispatched to track the PNS HANGOR Submarine after intercepted the messages sent by the crew to the PAKISTAN NAVY HQ.
The Attack Night Of PNS HANGOR Submarine:
Around midnight, the Commanding Officer of PNS HANGOR Commander Tasnim ordered the crew to dive deep to carry out a blind (sonar only) as the torpedo crew of the PNS HANGOR successfully tracked both the indian navy ships, INS Khukri and INS Kirpan, as they gradually came within the firing range of PNS HANGOR Submarine.
After successfully tracking and locking their targets, At 19:57 the PNS HANGOR fired down the throat with a homing torpedo at indian navy INS Kirpan by submerging at a depth of 40 meters (131 ft) from the indian navy warship.
The Homing Torpedo successfully tracked its target, but in the end no explosion was heard, which was a clear indication that the Homing Torpedo launched by the PNS HANGOR Submarine has missed its target. Furthermore, the movement the captain of INS Kirpan sensed the torpedo, he realized that the ship was under attack, so he immediately left the area with full throttle speed to avoid the attack.
It was a fact that it was PNS HANGOR who strike first at tits adversary, but it had failed to successfully hit its target INS Kirpan in the first strike.
Destruction Story of indian navy warship INS Khukri By PNS HANGOR Submarine:
As the indian navy INS Kirpan managed to flee the scene, the crew of the PNS HANGOR Submarine shifts all their focus to the other indian navy warship INS Khukri on its South. After detecting the location of PNS HANGOR Submarine and increased its speed to launch an attack on the PNS HANGOR Submarine.
As soon as the INS Khukri came very near to the PNS HANGOR Submarine, the attack crew of the PNS HANGOR Submarine immediately launched the second Torpedo at INS Khukri.
The Second Torpedo immediately struck the INS Khukri followed by the loud explosion, it was a clear indication that the torpedo launched by the PNS HANGOR has successfully struck the magazine of INS Khukri that led to the destruction of indian naval warship.
After the indian navy first ASW warfare INS Khukri destroyed, the INS Kirpan immediately moved into the scene with hope to engage the PNS HANGOR Submarine and INS Kirpan hastily dropped the depth charge in an attempt to destroy the PNS HANGOR Submarine.
Damaging Story of indian navy warship INS Kirpan By PNS HANGOR Submarine:
As soon as INS Kirpan came near to the PNS HANGOR Submarine, the attack crew of the PNS HANGOR Submarine immediately locks and launched its third lethal torpedo aiming at INS Khukri. This time the Torpedo launched by the PNS HANGOR Submarine successfully hit the tail of INS Kirpan followed by the loud explosion.
The Torpedo although does not help to sunk the INS Kirpan, but managed to cause huge substantial loss to the INS Kirpan.
During the Strike by the PNS HANGOR Submarine, the indian navy ASW capable warship INS Kirpan, although managed to survive the attack by gaining substantial loss, forced to abort its mission and INS Kirpan immediately left the battle area by turning its face towards West in deep waters.
On the other hand, the PNS HANGOR Submarine moved to search for the survivors of the destroyed INS Khukri ship, in the hope to rescue them, but INS Khukri completely destroyed in a matter of two minutes after the attack and vanished into deep sea along with its crew before the PNS HANGOR Submarine could reach it.
The indian navy has to bear the loss of its 18 officers and 176 Sailors, who died a painful death in the attack. This high number of casualty remains the most costly wartime casualty of indian navy in terms of lives.
On the very next day, the substantially damaged INS Kirpan starts the rescue operation along with with INS Katchal to rescue any possible survivors, but had to leave the area without any success.
After this shameful incident and utter humiliation of the entire indian navy by the PAKISTAN NAVY’s Submarine PNS HANGOR, the all western naval command of indian navy went mad and they indiscriminately dropped thousands of depth charges with hope to destroy the PNS HANGOR Submarine.
However, the Commander of PNS HANGOR Submarine Commander Tasnim, after submerging for nearly a week, successfully managed to return to its base during the night of 13 December with the depleted lead batteries.
The Commander of PNS HANGOR Submarine narrated the whole victorious incident as, An extensive air search combined with surface ships made our life miserable, but with the intelligent evasive action we managed to survive these attacks and arrived in Karachi safely after the ceasefire.”
PAKISTAN NAVY Hangor Project:
It is pertinent to mention that as a clear manifesto to recognize the valor, commitment, resolve, courage and professionalism shown by the Commander, Crew and Staff of PNS HANGOR Submarine.
PAKISTAN NAVY has started the Hangor Project. Under this project, PAKISTAN NAVY will indigenously built 4 numbers of state of the art Submarine in PAKISTAN at KSEW with Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement from its Iron Brother CHINA.
In 2015, PAKISTAN has signed one of the largest Defense Contract with its Iron Brother CHINA for the procurement of 8 numbers of state of the art AIP-based Attack Submarines.
Under the contract, 4 of the Submarines would be constructed at CHINA, while the other 4 Number of Submarines would be entirely built indigenously in PAKISTAN at the Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW), Karachi.
PAKISTAN NAVY has named the contract for indigenously constructing the 4 Number of Submarines at KS&EW and the procurement of another 4 from its Iron Brother CHINA as the PROJECT HANGOR. Reportedly, PAKISTAN NAVY will induct all the Submarines into its arsenal in the next couple of years.
That was the utter humiliation of the entire indian navy by the Brave Soldiers of PAKISTAN NAVY. It is a fact that whenever india tried to show aggression against Great PAKISTAN, it results in the utter humiliation and embarrassment of the indian armed forces, whether it was PNS HANGOR Submarine or Feb 27 indian humiliation and surprise day. The results were the same, but the intensity of the humiliation for the indian armed forces and the entire indian nation increased significantly.
